In a significant stride to bolster education infrastructure, the government has donated a newly constructed Grade 9 classroom to St. Ursula Nguviu Girls’ Boarding Primary and Junior School in Embu County.
The facility, officially opened and blessed on Thursday, is part of a broader initiative to address the growing needs of secondary education under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Embu County Director of Education Kosgey Kipruto stated that the classroom, among 137 constructed countywide in the first two phases, cost Sh1 million each.
Beneficiary schools were chosen based on a statistical analysis of student population and demand.
“Schools with more than 25 Grade 9 learners were prioritized, with an equitable distribution across all the 20 wards,” said Kipruto.
He added that schools benefiting in phases one and two would not be included in phases three and four, which aim to construct an additional 127 classrooms.
Kipruto emphasized that the upcoming classrooms, expected within a month, would cut the county’s classroom deficit to 23.
Local MPs are engaging through Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations to address the remaining gap.
“We’ve engaged Embu’s four MPs to address the remaining shortfall through Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations,” Kipruto said.
He urged schools experiencing population surges to promptly report to the ministry for support.
The new facility at St. Ursula Nguviu is a welcome relief but highlights lingering challenges. With 90 Grade 9 learners and only one classroom accommodating 45 students, the school faces a significant infrastructure gap.

Fr. Adrian Ireri, the Holy Family Nguviu Parish Priest and the school’s sponsor representative expressed gratitude for the government’s gesture but stressed the need for additional support.
“We are grateful, but the growing population demands more classrooms to ensure a conducive learning environment,” said Fr. Ireri.
Geoffrey Munyi Gichatha, the school’s Board of Management Chairman, echoed the plea, requesting individualized assessments to address schools’ infrastructure needs.
“I urge the government to evaluate schools individually to ensure sufficient infrastructure for their unique needs,” Gichatha said.
