The Embu County Government, through the Emergency Locust Response program, has compensated 121 families with galla goats in Mavuria ward, Mbeere South sub-county.

The beneficiaries are among the locals who lost their crops and pastures following the locust invasion four years ago.

The infestation of the locust in 2020 posed a severe food security threat to residents of Mavuria who strongly believe in goat keeping.

Caroline Wawira, a beneficiary, spoke of her relief at receiving the goat, which she said would help her feed her children and earn an income.

“The gala goats produce more milk compared to the normal breeds. They will help us feed our families and sell the excess to the community, ” she said.

The distribution of Galla goats equips farmers with a sustainable source of manure, enhancing crop yields and laying the groundwork for agricultural recovery and resilience.

Another beneficiary, Rael Muthoni, said the goats would boost the meat business in the area, improving the local economy as they reproduce fast.

Locals benefit with gala goats after locusts hit their farms four years ago.

“I am optimistic that these goats would improve the livelihood of our community and empower our economy. Thanks for the program,” she said.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire advised beneficiaries not to sell the goats and allow them to reproduce and benefit the community.

The goat distribution event happened at the Maria Consolata Iriamurai Catholic Church in Mavuria Ward.
