Residents of Embu County have been urged to seek early medical screening and treatment for breast, prostate and cervical cancer, with health officials warning that late diagnosis continues to complicate treatment and increase costs.
Speaking during the ongoing Daktari Mashinani outreach programme in Runyenjes, Dr. Mercy Wanjala noted that many patients are still arriving at health facilities when cancer is already at advanced stages, reducing the chances of successful treatment. She encouraged residents to prioritize regular screening to improve early detection and outcomes.
Dr. Wanjala also urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying enrollment is key to accessing services offered under the outreach programme, which is designed to improve healthcare access, especially for rural communities.
The ongoing initiative is providing a range of services, including cancer screening, eye check-ups, diabetes and hypertension screening, dental care, and specialist consultations at various public health facilities across the county. Residents are being encouraged to take advantage of the services while they are available.
