A family in Kabururi village, Mavuria Ward, Mbeere South Constituency, was left homeless on Monday after a suspected gas explosion sparked a fire that razed their house to the ground.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen when a cooking gas cylinder exploded, quickly spreading to the roof and other sections of the house, according to the homeowner, Bernadette Ngina.

Household items including furniture, clothing and other valuables were completely destroyed in the inferno.

No injuries were reported, as all family members managed to escape in time before the flames intensified.

Residents said they rushed to the homestead after hearing distress calls and helped evacuate the occupants. Despite their efforts, only a few items were salvaged as the fire spread rapidly before it could be brought under control.

The incident has renewed calls from locals for the deployment of a fire engine in nearby Kiritiri town, citing delayed emergency response due to the absence of a nearby firefighting unit.

Residents argue that establishing a fire station closer to the area would help reduce losses and protect lives and property during such emergencies.

The affected family is now appealing to well-wishers for assistance as they begin the process of rebuilding after the devastating loss.
