The Embu County Government has unveiled a new High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Embu Level Five Hospital, a major upgrade aimed at improving specialized and critical care services across the county.

The facility, launched by County Executive Committee Member for Health Hon. Jamal Runyenje on behalf of Governor Cecily Mbarire, is equipped with modern monitoring systems and specialized equipment.

The HDU is designed to bridge the gap between general wards and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), offering enhanced care for patients in serious but stable condition.

Governor Mbarire, through a statement delivered at the event, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and service delivery, terming the HDU a key milestone in her health sector reforms.

Hon. Runyenje said the unit will ease congestion in both the ICU and general wards, allowing for more targeted treatment and better patient outcomes.

“This HDU enables us to offer step-down care for patients transitioning from ICU and those who need close monitoring. It improves patient flow and enhances our capacity to manage emergencies and complex cases,” he noted.

Embu Level Five Hospital serves as the county’s main referral facility. The addition of the HDU is part of ongoing reforms that also include facility upgrades, specialist recruitment, and expanded preventive and curative services.
