Diocese of Embu Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u has called for the empowerment of the boy child through education while cautioning parents against involving their children in the muguka trade.

During the official opening and blessing of the Grade 4 block at Liviero Day and Boarding School in Gachoka, Embu, the bishop urged parents to prioritize their children’s education and holistic development over short-term financial gains.

“This is a muguka zone, but we must not allow our children to be drawn into the trade at the expense of their education. Our boys must be given the same opportunity as girls to excel in school, grow in discipline and responsibility, and become future leaders,” Bishop Kimani said in an interview with a church-based radio station journalist.

Many boys reportedly start engaging in Muguka farming and trade after reaching Grade 5.

The event, which included a Thanksgiving Mass, marked a major milestone for the school, which the Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart congregation run.

The bishop commended the sisters for their dedication to education and moral formation, emphasizing that faith-based institutions play a crucial role in shaping the values of young learners.

A highlight of the occasion was the recognition of Italian benefactors who funded the construction of five classrooms to accommodate the growing student population.

Expressing gratitude, Bishop Ndung’u praised their selflessness, stating, “Your kindness has given these children a brighter future. Education is the foundation of change, and your support is helping shape a generation of well-equipped young minds.”

During his homily, the bishop encouraged students, parents, and teachers to embrace change and contribute to the community’s transformation.

“It does not matter whether you are big or small; you can make a difference in the world. We all can touch lives by sharing our gifts,” he said, urging everyone to live a life of service and generosity.
