Agricultural experts have advised farmers to rely heavily on organic manure rather than synthetic fertilizers.
According to experts, synthentic fertilizers have detrimental effects on soils and the environment over the years.
“Synthetic fertilizers promote immediate crop growth but cause long-term soil deterioration, which reduces crop yields and overall sustainability. There is need to moderate its usage,” said Limbua Group Nursery Manager Regina Wanjiru.
Wanjiru said organic farming brings about lower yields compared to conventional farming due to slower release of nutrients.
“Strategically combining organic and synthetic fertilizers is beneficial to farmers as it provides a balanced nutrient supply to crops,” she noted.
Wanjiru said organic manure enrich soils with essential nutrients and foster a diverse microbial community.
“Organic manure is crucial for macadamia growth as it enhances soil fertility, improves water retention, and provides essential nutrients. This promotes healthier root system, encourages robust tree development, and ultimately increases macadamia yields.”
Nancy Muthoni, an officer from Farm Africa urged farmers to plant many trees as they play a vital role in creating organic manure.
“Fallen leaves, branches, and organic matter contribute to the formation of nutrient-rich humus, enhancing soil fertility. This natural cycle supports sustainable agriculture and promotes healthier ecosystems,” she said.
The advise comes at a time when agricultural communities and the Kenyan government explore policies that encourage green practices to address climatic challenges.
