At least 500 elderly persons from Mbuvori village in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County have received food donations from well-wishers.
The senior citizens, hardly hit by the current economic times, received donations from Mama Doing Good Foundation in partnership with Teachers Service Commission chairman Jamleck Muturi.
Speaking while issuing the donations at Mbuvori ACK church grounds, Muturi said many elderly people in the area were in dire need as a result of neglect.
“Many have been neglected even by their relatives. We ought to help our people even in their old age,” he said.
He urged teachers to instill the values of respect, patriotism, and love of the old to pupils and students at an early age.
Steve Kithisia from Mama Doing Good Foundation said some of the senior citizens in the country had nothing to celebrate during Christmas and New Year festivities.
“Let’s make earth a small heaven for the elderly. They have contributed a lot towards our well-being. We need to visit them regularly,” he said.
Reverend Joseph Muchangi said the elderly people in the area were suffering in silence.
Many beneficiaries said they had insufficient food and appealed to the government to ensure timely disbursement of monthly stipends.
They said early disbursement of the Inua Jamii funds would enable them to cater to their well-being without difficulties.
