The Holy Father Pope Francis appointed the Diocese of Embu’s new bishop, Monsignor Peter Kimani Ndung’u, who vowed to prioritize the spirit of ecumenism during his tenure.

This commitment comes as the diocese prepares to transition from the leadership of His Grace Anthony Muheria, Archbishop of Nyeri, who has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator of Embu following the transfer of Bishop Paul Kariuki in September 2023.

During his first encounter with the Diocesan clergy and the religious at John Cardinal Njue pastoral center located in Karurina, Embu on Thursday, the Bishop-Elect emphasized the importance of fostering unity among different Christian denominations within the region.

“Our unity is our strength and we will bring together the diverse Christian communities in Embu and walk together in the spirit of synodality,” he said.

The Bishop-Elect took the opportunity to echo the words of John Cardinal Njue, a prominent figure in the Kenyan Catholic Church, saying, “Tumetoka mbali, Tuko mbali, na tunaenda mbali,” which translates to “We have come a long way, we are far, and we are going far.”

This phrase encapsulates the journey of the Church in Embu, reflecting both the progress made and the aspirations for the future.

Fr. Kimani highlighted this phrase as a guiding principle for the clergy, encouraging them to use it as their call to service.

He added, “As we embark on this journey together, I ask for your prayers. Let us work together to strengthen our Church by embracing forgiveness, love, and unity in all we do.”

Archbishop Muheria expressed his gratitude to God for the appointment of Bishop-Elect Kimani, calling it a blessing for the Diocese of Embu.

“We thank God for gifting us with a shepherd. I call upon all the clergy, religious, and Christians to support him wholeheartedly as he takes up this important role,” he said.

The Diocese of Embu has been without a permanent bishop since Bishop Kariuki’s transfer, making the upcoming installation of Bishop-Elect Kimani a significant event for the local Catholic community.

Archbishop Muheria also noted that he would soon share a detailed program and list of activities leading up to the new bishop’s installation.
