More than 2,700 children living with disabilities from schools across the Mount Kenya region gathered at the University of Embu grounds for the fourth edition of the Mount Kenya Sunshine Rally, an annual event aimed at promoting inclusion, empowerment, and social interaction.
Organized by a charitable organization in partnership with stakeholders, the rally provided a vibrant platform for the children to engage in games, entertainment, shared meals, and receive mobility aids—activities designed to boost confidence and foster a sense of belonging.
Speaking after the event, Rotary District Governor Wairimu Njagi praised the increased turnout, noting a rise from 2,500 participants recorded during last year’s edition.
She attributed the growth to improving awareness and acceptance among parents and schools.
Njagi emphasized the importance of such forums in helping children with disabilities build confidence and integrate socially, while also commending the collaboration between the County Government of Embu and private partners for making the event a success.
She further called on the national government to enhance support for children with disabilities by establishing more special needs units in schools to ensure easier access to education.
Meanwhile, Rotarian Wachuka Muriuki from Murang’a urged the government to improve healthcare services tailored to children with disabilities, citing ongoing challenges in accessing specialized medical care.
The annual Sunshine Rally continues to stand out as a key initiative in championing inclusion and giving children with disabilities an opportunity to thrive beyond the classroom.
