A major four-year agricultural initiative, spearheaded by the African Sustainable Environmental Consortium (ASEC), has been unveiled at the University, with ambitious targets to strengthen value chains and plant 100,000 tree seedlings as part of Kenya’s broader 15-billion-tree campaign.

Speaking after the ASEC stakeholders’ meeting held at the university, Kezziah Ngari, President of the Embu County Campus Students Organization (ECCSO), confirmed that university and college students will play a central role in the tree-growing agenda.

ECCSO has formally partnered with ASEC to support the reforestation efforts by mobilizing students to plant and nurture tree seedlings across Embu County and beyond.

“This partnership is our contribution not just to the environment, but to national development. We will actively take part in seedling distribution, planting, and environmental awareness to help achieve ASEC’s target and contribute meaningfully to the national goal of 15 billion trees by 2032,” Ms Ngari said.

The project, which will run through 2029, also aims to boost sustainability in agricultural value chains by promoting climate-smart farming practices, engaging youth and women, and improving market linkages.

Stakeholders from academia, local government, civil society, and the private sector attended the launch meeting, underscoring the cross-sectoral importance of environmental sustainability.

The tree seedlings will be sourced from local nurseries, including those operated by youth and women groups, to ensure community involvement and economic empowerment.

The University of Embu, already known for its agricultural research and environmental programs, is expected to serve as a knowledge and coordination hub for the initiative, aligning with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Africa Agenda 2063 on sustainable development.
