The government has reaffirmed its commitment to support families affected by the worsening drought in Tana River County, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku has said.

Speaking in Tana Delta while overseeing the distribution of relief food, Ruku said the State is working to help at least 180 households displaced by floods and prolonged dry conditions to recover and rebuild their livelihoods.

He noted that the ongoing drought has compounded an already fragile humanitarian situation in the region, leaving many families unable to meet basic food and water needs.

During his visit to Garsen Constituency, the CS observed that most earth dams, water pans and seasonal rivers had dried up, exposing residents and their livestock to acute water shortages and rising food insecurity.

In Kokane Sub-County, Ruku assessed the severity of the drought and monitored the distribution of emergency supplies, assuring residents that government support would continue until conditions improve.

“The situation in Garsen reflects a wider national challenge,” Ruku said, revealing that more than 23 counties are currently experiencing drought, with over 2.3 million Kenyans facing food insecurity.

He added that the government has intensified coordinated response efforts through relevant agencies to address the immediate needs of affected communities, while also rolling out long-term interventions to build resilience against future disasters.

These include enhanced water harvesting, construction of earth dams and water pans, and promotion of climate-resilient livelihood programmes.

Ruku also toured Imani Primary School in Tana Delta, which was relocated after devastating floods and now serves more than 300 learners.

He said the State Department for Special Programs has funded the construction of several school facilities to ensure learning continues in a safe environment despite the effects of climate-related disasters.
