Embu County is set for a potential economic transformation after the National Government confirmed the presence of significant deposits of coltan and other strategic minerals critical to digital, industrial and energy transition technologies.

Speaking during a high-level consultative meeting in Embu, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Ali Joho said the county is among those identified by the Government of Kenya as hosting strategic minerals essential for global industrial development and the clean energy transition.

Joho stated that geological records and ongoing exploration activities confirm occurrences of columbite and tantalite — collectively known as coltan — as well as copper, graphite, mica including aquamarine, rare earth elements, and various construction and industrial minerals.

He revealed that geological mapping has identified multiple coltan occurrence sites in Kaumu in Kiambere, Kiangunguru areas, and Gatue — all located in Mbeere North.

Prospects of copper, zinc, silver, gold and rare earth elements have also been identified, particularly in the lower parts of Embu County.

Describing coltan as a highly strategic mineral, Joho noted that it is widely used in the manufacture of electronic devices, renewable energy technologies and advanced industrial applications, positioning Embu as an emerging mineral hub in Eastern Kenya.

Leaders at the meeting affirmed that proper regulatory frameworks, strong community engagement and sustainable mining practices will guide the process to ensure exploitation of the strategic minerals translates into inclusive growth and long-term prosperity for the people of Embu.

The discovery and confirmation of the mineral occurrences firmly position Embu County as an emerging strategic mineral host and a key contributor to Kenya’s industrialization and energy transition agenda.
