St. Ursula Boarding Girls Primary and Junior Secondary School marked National Tree Planting Day with a significant environmental initiative to promote sustainability and conservation.

The Friday afternoon event, held on the school grounds, saw enthusiastic participation from students, support staff, and teachers with support from their neighbors at St. Angela Nguviu Girls, who generously donated the trees.

“Our mission today is not only to beautify our surroundings but to instill a sense of responsibility towards our environment in our students,” said Ann Muchangi, the school’s deputy headteacher.

Ms Muchangi highlighted the importance of trees in combating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and improving air quality.

The event featured planting over 300 tree saplings, including some indigenous species known for their fast growth and ecological benefits.

Learners from the primary and junior secondary sections participated actively, each grade responsible for planting a seedling around the school premises.

“Every tree we plant today is a step towards a healthier planet for future generations,” Ms Muchangi added.

The learners praised the initiative, expressing their enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.

Joy-Ann Wambui, a learner, said planting trees means a better world for the current and future generations.

“Today, we have launched the National Elimu Tree Planting Day in our school. Trees are important. They help control soil erosion, attract rain, and beautify our environment. I am happy being part of this activity,” Wambui said.

In addition to planting, the students engaged in mulching the seedlings to ensure better moisture retention and soil fertility.

To ensure the trees’ survival, the school has arranged for support staff to care for the saplings during holidays.

This initiative guarantees continuous maintenance and monitoring, ensuring the young trees grow healthy and strong.
