A third-year medical student at Embu University was on Tuesday found dead in his Kangaru apartment in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased, identified as 22-year-old Josphat Maina Njogu, was discovered by his apartment caretaker after failing to be seen for a day.
“I was shocked to see his body inside the room,” the caretaker said, recalling how he spotted the lifeless body through the window.
Kangaru Location Chief Moses Munyi confirmed the incident, noting that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death.
He expressed concern over the rising number of suicides among university students and urged the institution to strengthen mental health support.
“The university must look into the welfare of students beyond academics,” Munyi said, calling for expanded counseling services to reach even those living in private hostels.

He further appealed to parents to maintain close communication with their children despite them being in university.
Neighbors described Njogu as a quiet and reserved young man. “It is very sad for parents to lose such a promising soul whose future looked bright,” said resident Milka Mukami.
Grief engulfed the scene as the student’s family broke down on arrival to witness their son’s body being taken away.
The body was moved to Embu Level Five Hospital Mortuary as the family awaits post-mortem results and prepares burial arrangements.
