The Embu County Government has unveiled a water drilling rig, a test pumping machine, and a support truck for ferrying equipment, casings, and fuel for drilling operations.
The Sh57 million equipment is poised to alleviate the perennial water challenges that have long afflicted the region’s residents, offering a glimmer of hope for improved livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
The launch ceremony, held on Monday at Embu town, was attended by local government officials, community leaders, and residents eager to witness the implementation of a solution to their longstanding water woes.
Speaking at the launching event, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire emphasized the importance of reliable access to water for all.
“The launch of this water drilling rig marks a significant milestone in our commitment to ensuring access to clean and reliable water for all residents of Embu County, particularly those in the arid and semi-arid areas,” she said.
Mbarire said the executive would collaborate with leaders, community, and institutions in groundwater prospecting, drilling, equipping, and solarizing high-yielding boreholes in the county to improve water access.
Expressing his support for the initiative, Kiambeere MCA Lenny Masters Mwaniki emphasized the significance of the water drilling rig in alleviating the hardships endured by communities grappling with inadequate access to clean water.
“I am confident that the availability of reliable water sources will not only alleviate the hardships faced by our people but also unlock opportunities for economic growth and development,” Embu speaker Josiah Thiriku noted.
The consequences of water scarcity in the semi-arid Mbeere region were vividly illustrated as locals undertook perilous journeys, traveling tens of kilometers to fetch water from crocodile-infested rivers.
Other leaders present were MCAs Newton Karish (Muminji), Barnabas Njama (Kyeni South), Sammy Tito (Nthawa), and Dancun Mbui of Evurore ward.
