Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has defended President William Ruto’s upcoming visit to Mt Kenya, urging residents to turn up in large numbers despite growing political tensions in the region.
Mundigi dismissed critics questioning Ruto’s political influence in the region, asserting that preparations for the visit were well underway.
His remarks appeared to counter Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, who recently suggested that Ruto’s grip on Mt Kenya was weakening.
“The visit is happening, and nothing will stop it. The President is coming to the Mountain, and we must be ready to welcome him,” Mundigi told the press.
The visit comes at a politically charged moment following the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a key figure in the region who had pushed for Mt Kenya’s economic unity under the “one-man, one-vote, one-shilling” revenue model.
His removal has sparked divisions among local leaders, with some rallying behind Ruto while others view it as a betrayal.
Ruto’s newfound alliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga has further unsettled some Mt Kenya leaders and voters who opposed Raila in past elections.
Mundigi reassured residents that Ruto’s visit would prioritize development, stating, “The President is coming with opportunities. We have a Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who represents our interests. This is not just about politics; it is about securing development for our people.”
The tour will be a crucial test of Ruto’s political strength in the region. A strong turnout would reaffirm his support, while a low reception could signal shifting allegiances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, a senior figure from Mt Kenya, has confirmed that he will not accompany the President on the tour.
