Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has declared his support for the impeachment of governors and Cabinet Secretaries who fail to deliver on their mandate, insisting that leaders must be held accountable for poor service delivery.

Speaking after a church service at St. James Mayori ACK Church in Mbeere South on Sunday, Mundigi warned that senators would have no choice but to back valid motions seeking the removal of non-performing leaders.

“Kenyans entrusted governors with leadership to improve their lives, not to enrich themselves or abandon their responsibilities. If a governor is not performing, the law provides for impeachment, and that process should be pursued,” he said.

The senator urged Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to strengthen their oversight role by summoning governors accused of negligence or gross misconduct.

However, he cautioned against frivolous or politically motivated impeachment motions, saying they would waste public resources and destabilize counties.

“MCAs are placed in assemblies to ensure counties are governed according to the Constitution. If they are dissatisfied with a governor and have valid reasons for impeachment, then they should proceed — but only by following the law,” he emphasized.

Mundigi’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny of several county chiefs accused of corruption, stalled projects, and misuse of funds.

Recent impeachment attempts in Meru, Isiolo, Kericho, Nyamira, and Nairobi have sparked heated debates with mixed outcomes in the Senate.

In his closing remarks, the legislator rallied Kenyans to support President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, while dismissing the “Wantam” movement as a distraction from the government’s development agenda.
