Atop the highest accessible summit of Mount Kenya, Lenana Peak, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Chief Officer John Gitari achieved a remarkable feat by hoisting the union’s green flag.
His four-day solo climb over the weekend symbolized the unwavering spirit of KNUT’s advocacy for teachers’ rights and welfare.
Gitari, an experienced hiker, embarked on the grueling trek through the rugged terrain, overcoming harsh weather and high-altitude challenges.
At 4,985 meters above sea level, he raised the KNUT flag—signed by top union officials—marking a symbolic triumph for teachers’ struggles.
“Just as I have conquered this mountain, we are determined to overcome any hurdles in ensuring better working conditions for teachers,” Gitari remarked after his climb, drawing a parallel between his ascent and the ongoing battles faced by educators.
His daughter, Elizabeth Wanjiku, an environmental consultant accompanied him through the journey. Wanjiku played a crucial role in planning and managing the hike.
Gitari’s experience, including past hikes in the Aberdare Range and Ngong Hills, proved invaluable in his successful summit attempt.
At the peak, he took a moment for personal reflection, holding his Bible and offering a silent sermon against the backdrop of strong winds, signifying the deep personal meaning of his achievement.
A close friend lauded Gitari’s determination, stating that his climb was not just a physical accomplishment but a testament to his unwavering commitment to KNUT’s cause.
“This achievement reflects his resilience, dedication, and spirit. No peak is too high, no challenge too great,” the friend noted.
Inspired by his latest success, Gitari has now set his sights on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak.
His journey up Mount Kenya stands as a powerful symbol of perseverance, unity, and the relentless pursuit of justice for Kenyan teachers.
