Rukuriri and Mungania tea factories in Embu County are installing machinery to process orthodox tea.
KTDA National Chairman Enos Njeru said factories have embarked on processing orthodox tea to diversify products so as to ensure farmers earn more money.
He said orthodox tea was in high demand in the global market.
“From the recent bonus pay, we learned that factories processing orthodox tea received more money from the sale of this variety,” Njeru said.
He revealed that contractors in the two factories were already on site urging the national government to fulfill its promises on funds for the installation of orthodox tea processing machinery.
“We call upon the government to release the promised funds on time since the contractors are already on site,” he said.
Njeru emphasized that KTDA’s goal is to ensure that 12 tea factories acquire these machines in the first phase, with no financial obstacles.
Rukuriri and Mungania are the pioneer factories to install the machines in Embu.
Mungania Factory Chairman, Mr. Njeru Mwenje, anticipated increased income for farmers, thus instilling confidence in the sustainability and profitability of orthodox tea cultivation in the region.
