Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis ChirChir has cautioned residents living near major rivers and dams over possible floods.

He urged them to stay vigilant and consider relocating to higher grounds if necessary to prevent any potential loss of lives and property caused by overflow of rivers during the ongoing heavy rains.

The warning comes in light of escalating water levels in the Seven Forks Dams, posing a potential threat of flooding of rivers downstream.

KenGen announced that Kamburu dam is nearing its maximum capacity, saying they expected floods in some areas anytime soon.

According to reports by KenGen, Kamburu dam water levels are currently at 1,005.82 meters above sea level against a maximum capacity of 1,006.50 meters.

The report further said should the rains persist, the dam could fill to maximum levels early next week.

Speaking at seven folk dams on Friday, the CS encouraged residents to embrace the heavy rains as they could positively impact the hydroenergy sector in Kenya.

“The Seven Forks Dams, particularly Masinga, are experiencing substantial inflows, presenting an opportunity to boost hydropower generation,” said Chirchir.

“Despite Masinga’s current low levels, the surge in hydropower is expected to stabilize electricity costs, positively affecting the cost of living for Kenyans,” ChirChir added.

He noted that the ministry is implementing measures to optimize water usage, enhance grid infrastructure, and monitor ecological impacts.

“Furthermore, we are engaging the local communities to leverage this period of abundance to promote agricultural activities that will benefit from the improved power supply and water availability,” said Chirchir.

KenGen Managing Director Peter Njenga pointed out that they are upping generation activities in the lower dams, notably Kamburu, Gitaru, Kindaruma, and Kiambere to optimize the use of increasing waters.

Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks.
