Residents of Muvinge Market in Mumoni Sub-county in Kitui County now have a permanent water source amid the crisis that faces the area.
Apart from the market, the newly installed water kiosk will serve residents of Mariri, Kanyungu, Kakunguu and Konyu villages.
The water comes from a borehole owned by a businessman, Mwendwa Kanunu alias Kadoli who solely facilitated construction of the water systems to the kiosk.
“It has been a long period of suffering due to water scarcity. Initially, we walked for five kilometers to fetch water at the seasonal Katse river or Kwa Ngomo earthdam,” said Mwende Muli, a beneficially of the project.
Mwende, a business lady at the market said those who could not make it to any of the two sources was forced to part away with Sh30 for a 20-litre jerrican.
“We are happy now since we can fetch water from the kiosk anytime. We won’t waste time covering long distances in search of the commodity,” she added.
On his side, Kadoli noted that the challenges faced by locals, especially women and children while looking for water made him find a way of saving the community.
“Sometimes, they would go to the river or the earthdam and return without water. Other times, they returned with dirty water which is not good for consumption. This challenged me to look for a solution,” he said.
The kiosk has not only saved locals from covering long distances in search of water but also saves them Sh10 per 20-litre jerrican of water.
A 20-litre jerrican of water costs Sh20 from the kiosk that is capable of serving over 100 households.
