Police in Karatina, Nyeri County, have launched investigations into the brutal murder of a first-year Karatina University student, allegedly killed by her boyfriend in a suspected love triangle.
The victim, Bonita Ngatha Kariuki, 21, a Bachelor of Education student, was stabbed to death inside a male hostel on Friday, February 14, 2025, at around 3 PM.
According to preliminary police reports, she had spent most of the day with the suspect before the fatal attack.
Mathira East Sub-County Police Commander Samson Leweri confirmed that two suspects had been arrested to assist with investigations.
Leweri said the main suspect, Kelvin Nyagah, 25, fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Police have launched a manhunt for Nyagah, urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
Investigators revealed that Ngatha was last seen entering the male hostel, where she was reportedly welcomed by Nyagah just hours before her death.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though authorities suspect a romantic dispute.
The victim’s body was moved to Karatina Level Five Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Her grieving parents spent Saturday at Karatina Police Station seeking answers about their daughter’s tragic death.
The victim and the suspect hail from Embu County but were pursuing studies at Karatina University.
Authorities have urged students to remain calm as investigations continue.
