More than 2,500 children with disabilities from 17 schools across Kenya gathered at the Embu University grounds for the 3rd Mount Kenya Sunshine Rally, an event promoting inclusivity and empowerment.

Organized by the Rotary Club of Kenya, the event brought together children from Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Meru, and Tharaka-Nithi counties for a day filled with interactive sessions, music, bouncing castles, dancing, meals, and gift-sharing.

Rotary District Country Chair Sofie Njagi emphasized the importance of inclusivity, calling for societal support in unlocking the potential of children with disabilities.

“One of the core values of Rotary is diversity. We strive to embrace everyone because these children can achieve great things,” Njagi stated.

She also urged increased partnerships to support initiatives that empower differently abled children.

Embu Rotary Club President Brian Mteeve echoed her sentiments, urging the government to allocate more resources to institutions that cater to children with disabilities.

“One challenge faced by people living with disabilities is a lack of recognition by society. As Rotarians, beyond providing fun activities, we also appreciate the dedication of teachers and caregivers who offer unwavering support,” he said.

Teachers and caregivers welcomed the initiative, highlighting its impact on the children.

Esther Kimani, a teacher at Kerugoya Primary School for the Deaf, expressed gratitude, noting that many children in boarding schools rarely get such opportunities to interact and have fun.

The Saturday event reinforced the importance of fostering an inclusive society where all children, regardless of their abilities, were valued and given equal opportunities to thrive.
