Traders in Kibugu, Kiriari, and Kithimu markets in Embu County can now extend their business hours safely into the night, thanks to the installation of new high-mast floodlights under the Lighting Up Manyatta Program.
The project, spearheaded by Manyatta MP Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, has transformed the three markets into vibrant evening hubs, improving security, attracting more customers, and energizing the local economy.
Stall owners say the bright lights—popularly known as Mulika Biashara—have already increased sales and created a more secure environment for both traders and shoppers.

“This is a game-changer. We can now work longer without fear. Customers feel safer, and our businesses are growing,” said a local trader in Kithimu who sought anonymity due to political inclination assumptions.
Hon. Mukunji said the initiative is part of a broader effort to support a 24-hour economy in Manyatta Constituency.
He added that plans were underway to secure additional funding to light up more markets across the region.
The Lighting Up Manyatta Program continues to demonstrate how practical infrastructure investments can spur local enterprise, enhance community safety, and empower residents economically.
