Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku has announced a groundbreaking reduction in day school fees in his constituency, setting it at an unprecedented Sh1,300 per term.

The MP announced this during a bursary issuance event, marking a substantial departure from the existing fee structures and signaling a commitment to making education more accessible for all.

“This program covers only the students who come from the Mbeere North sub-county and not from any other place. To benefit, one also needs to be studying in our day schools,” he said.

This will leave each student paying Sh3,900 annually. Initially, the day school fee within the sub-county ranged from Sh10,000 to Sh12,000 per year.

Ruku said the decision was driven by his dedication to ensuring that education remains a fundamental right for every child in the area.

He noted that by making day school education more affordable, they are not only supporting parents but also creating a more equitable learning environment for all students.

The new fee charges will take effect at the beginning of the next academic term, January 2024, providing parents with immediate relief. The program will be sustained through CDF kitty.

“We are also strategizing on how we can have a comprehensive plan to support boarding students to ease the financial burden on parents grappling with the soaring costs of education,” he revealed.

During the event meant for tertiary students, the MP issued cheques worth Sh22 million and each student benefited with Sh10,000.

A wave of joy swept through beneficiaries who were optimistic that the MP would continue providing the much-needed financial assistance to alleviate the economic challenges associated with education.

“It’s a wonderful surprise! This bursary will make a significant difference for our family and my education,” said Jackson Njeru, a third-year student.

Mbeere North CDF chairman Jervasius Nyumbakothe assured the public that the bursary distribution process will be efficient and transparent.

The MP proposes to have the minimum entry mark requirements reduced for Mbeere North students to enable them get slots at the national schools located in the area.
