Kenyan political circles were abuzz with mixed reactions after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga lost the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid to Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, in a tightly contested election held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

While some Kenyans expressed disappointment, others took to social media to mock his loss, urging him to shift focus back to domestic politics.

“In respect of our silhouettes, we celebrate the downfall of Raila Odinga,” posted one X user, reflecting the sentiments of those critical of Odinga’s bid.

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid of VocalAfrica was more direct, stating; “Raila’s loss is well deserved! You can’t betray and dance on the graves of the youth of Kenya and go on to pretend to care about Africa.”

However, others extended messages of support and encouragement. Kitui County Woman Representative Irene Kasalu wrote: “There is always next time, Baba. Come, let’s support Kalonzo Musyoka.”

Odinga, who had been a strong contender in the race, had led in the early rounds of voting but ultimately lost after Youssouf secured the required two-thirds majority with 33 votes after seven rounds of balloting.

In his victory speech, Youssouf thanked African leaders for their support and vowed to serve the AU with integrity and commitment.

“I am deeply honored to be elected to lead the African Union Commission. I thank my fellow candidates, Raila Odinga and Richard Randriamandrato, for their dedication and vision. Together, we will work towards a united and prosperous Africa,” he posted on his X platform.

Youssouf succeeds Chad’s Moussa Faki, who has served two terms since 2017. His four-year term is expected to focus on addressing key continental challenges and advancing Africa’s development agenda.

As Kenya comes to terms with the election outcome, Odinga’s next political steps will be closely watched, with speculation mounting over whether he will now turn his focus back to local politics.
