An Embu Member of the County Assembly (MCA) has emphasized the need for a clear distinction between sports and politics.
Mavuria ward MCA Ngari Mbaka stressed that the involvement of politics in sports undermines the spirit of fair play and athletic excellence.
Speaking at Umau grounds in Kiritiri, Mbeere South sub-county, during the Winas Sacco KVF Embu league leg two games, Mbaka lamented the common practice of activating sporting activities during campaign periods only for them to fizzle out after elections.
“Sports should remain a beacon of unity and excellence, unsullied by political agendas. Our athletes deserve an environment that celebrates dedication, talent, and hard work like the way Winas Sacco is doing it,” he said.
The MCA added, “We are profoundly thankful to Winas Sacco for their generous support. This partnership will greatly enhance our athletes’ capabilities and the league’s overall quality.”
He stressed the importance of maintaining the purity of sports and called on politicians to support sports without expecting anything in return.
Highlighting the active participation from his ward, Mbaka noted with pride that Mavuria had fronted three teams in the KVF Embu League.

Kenya Volleyball Federation referee Edna Mumbi underscored the negative impact of inadequate support on youth, leading many to indulge in drugs.
“Lack of proper support for sports has driven many young people to destructive behaviors such as drug abuse. We need to invest in sports to provide them with positive outlets and opportunities,” the coach stated.
Hon.Mbaka thanked Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire for her Talanta Hela initiative, which aims to nurture and promote local talent.
Saying the County Government had set aside Sh11 million in the last budget for sports, the MCA expressed hope that the devolved unit would allocate more funds for sports in the upcoming budget.
He encouraged other businesses and organizations to follow Winas Sacco’s lead by investing in local sports.
