Over 5,600 elders from Mbeere North have thrown their weight behind a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the upcoming parliamentary by-election, signaling a major political shift in the constituency.

In a landmark gathering dubbed the “5600 Elders Baraza” at Siakago Girls’ Grounds, the elders pledged full support for the ruling party and vowed to mobilize grassroots backing for a pro-government candidate.

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who attended the event, lauded the elders’ unity and assured residents of a free and fair election.

While promising non-interference, he urged the Mbeere community to support UDA for continued development gains.

“The government has returned a Cabinet position to this region. The people of Mbeere should reciprocate by voting for a government-backed candidate. Don’t let me down,” said Prof. Kindiki, affirming his commitment to lead the campaign.

Key stalled infrastructure projects are set for revival, including the tarmacking of the Kanyuambora–Kamumu–Kageri road, upgrades to irrigation schemes, and expansion of rural electrification.

Prof. Kindiki promised completion by 2027, attributing earlier delays to budget constraints.

The by-election follows the appointment of former MP Hon. Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes.

His elevation was hailed by the elders as a historic achievement for the Mbeere community.

In a joint statement, read by Ngome Council official Ben Kanyenji, the Mbeere Community Council of Elders expressed gratitude to President William Ruto and Deputy President Kindiki for recognizing their community at the national level. They pledged to deliver a decisive victory for UDA.

Eight aspirants have declared interest in the UDA ticket. Prof. Kindiki assured transparent nominations and promised government inclusion for those who don’t clinch the ticket.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is yet to announce the by-election date, but the campaign momentum is clearly underway, with Mbeere elders taking a pivotal role.
