Residents of Kang’ondu village in Runyenjes, Embu County are increasingly alarmed by the rising number of accidents at Itundu Bridge, following a recent incident involving a lorry carrying 200 bags of sugar.
The driver and conductor of the vehicle narrowly escaped death after the lorry veered off the road.
On Wednesday dawn, the lorry lost control while crossing the notorious stretch of the road.
The driver and his conductor escaped unhurt, but the incident has heightened concerns among the local community.
They attribute the frequent accidents to the narrow width of the road and its poor maintenance.
“This road is very dangerous. Accidents happen frequently because of its narrow width and sharp bends,” said Simon Munyi, a resident.
“We urge the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) to repair this road immediately to prevent further accidents,” added Peter Mugo, another resident.
The residents’ plea comes amid ongoing complaints about poor road infrastructure from various parts of the Embu-Meru highway.
