As the festive season continues, residents of Embu find themselves in the grip of fear as reports circulate about the possible consumption of donkey meat.

The fears heightened after police arrested three suspects for allegedly slaughtering over 20 donkeys at Kajikeru village, Kasafari sublocation, Karurumo location, following a tip-off from locals.

“A group of men bearing crude weapons had been sighted escorting a herd of donkeys. Officers led by Runyenjes OCS and DCI responded and visited the home of John Mureithi, where approximately 15 persons were found butchering donkeys,” a police report read.

Reports indicated that three people were arrested while others managed to escape. It is believed that the meat was to be taken to the Barma market in Nairobi.

Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina said police had launched investigations and are pursuing the main suspect, who is at large.

The unsettling news prompted concerns among the community, leading to a cautious approach to festive feasting.

Embu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Francis Nwiga urged local butchers to adhere strictly to public health guidelines, particularly food safety standards.

He cautioned that legal action would be taken against any butcher flouting regulations, underlining the commitment to ensuring the highest standards in the meat industry.

Ndwiga urged residents to remain vigilant and ensure the meat they purchase for their Christmas meals comes from reliable and trustworthy sources.

“Food safety is critical. I advise Embu people to be watchful and work closely with health officers to ensure they eat the right food, especially during the festive season,” he said.

He said there have been increased cases of donkey slaughtering in the area, and locals should report any case of suspicion.
