Kamiu location chief Sammy Mugo has stressed the need for home fire safety measures to prevent possible disasters.
The administrator urged locals to acquire basic skills, saying they would greatly help to avert fire tragedies.
Chief Mugo spoke after a devastating fire destroyed a timber house in Kariguri area of Majimbo, Manyatta Constituency in Embu County, leaving a family of seven homeless.
The fire, which started around 7:00 pm on Saturday, quickly burned the home, giving the dwellers little time to salvage their belongings.
“Basic fire safety measures, can save lives and property in such incidents,” said Chief Mugo, who coordinated the rescue efforts.
Despite the prompt arrival of the local fire brigade, the house was completely razed, leaving the family with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
“I was cooking, and my husband was in the bathroom when we heard our little one scream about a fire inside the house. By the time I ran in, flames had engulfed the rooms,” said 53-year-old, Elosy Murugi.
The fire also consumed three goats. However, a worker, Samuel Gitonga, managed to save one goat after noticing smoke from afar.
“I appeal to the government to help the family recover from this loss,” said Gitonga, describing the emotional and financial toll of the tragedy.
The family was temporarily housed in a nearby church.
A young girl from the family revealed that the flames originated in a bedroom, preventing the rescue of essential items like her grandmother’s medication.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
Chief Mugo appealed to the community to support the affected family members with clothing, food, and other necessities.
