Kirinyaga leaders and residents have urged the government to allow former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua a peaceful reception as he returns from a private trip to the United States this week.

Led by Kerugoya Ward MCA Erick Muchina, the group accused the State of planning to infiltrate the homecoming with hired groups to portray Gachagua and his supporters as violent.

“As his supporters, we intend to welcome him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. However, we are worried that the government plans to arrest him, yet we see no fault in him,” Muchina told journalists in Kerugoya on Wednesday.

Residents expressed optimism about Gachagua’s return, saying his leadership could inspire fresh ideas in governance.

“He is a seasoned leader who can uplift ordinary citizens,” said Peter Kiiru, while Moses Waweru insisted that Gachagua deserves the same respect accorded to past opposition leaders on their return from foreign trips.

The call comes amid speculation of widening rifts within the Kenya Kwanza government, where Gachagua has in recent months taken a more combative stance against some of President William Ruto’s allies.
