The Kenyan government has announced its ambitious initiative to organize the Eastern Africa Drama and Film Competitions.
The move seeks to amplify the voices of filmmakers and dramatists across the region, propelling them onto the global stage.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu announced the plan during the 62nd edition of the National Drama and Film Festivals at Kangaru Girls High School.
He said that Kenya has been competing with Uganda, but the government will push to see if it can start competing with other countries within the Eastern African region.
“Moving forward, we are not going to have these activities only within the country but also in the Eastern Africa region, ” Machogu noted.
He encouraged countries like Tanzania and Rwanda among others in the region, to take arts seriously to upscale competitions internationally.
He noted that Kenya would be moving out to train other countries within the region and encouraging them.
Machogu observed improvements in art performance in the country dictated by the large number of schools participating in the 2024 National Drama and Film Festivals compared to 2023.
“The great talents displayed by the participants need to be tapped and nurtured,” he added.
He noted that performing arts will be an area that the government will fully support, adding that it will be compulsory in the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) syllabus.
