Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially gazetted the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to assist police operations nationwide to restore order amid escalating anti-Finance Bill protests.

The announcement comes in response to the widespread unrest that has gripped the country, following the introduction of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

The decision, outlined in the Kenya Gazette, authorizes the KDF to work with the National Police Service to maintain law and order.

“The Kenya Defence Forces are deployed to support the police in response to the security emergency caused by the ongoing violent protests in various parts of the country,” the gazette notice stated.

This deployment marks a significant escalation in the government’s response to the protests, which have seen thousands of Kenyans take to the streets across major cities and towns.

Demonstrators have expressed outrage over provisions in the Finance Bill 2024, which they argue will exacerbate the cost of living and place an undue burden on ordinary citizens.

The protests have been marked by sporadic clashes between demonstrators and police, leading to deaths, injuries, and arrests.
