Journalists in Embu and Kirinyaga counties have converged in Embu town, joining their counterparts nationwide to protest against police brutality.
The protests were triggered by the recent shooting of K24 journalist Catherine Wanjeri by a police officer while she was covering Gen-Z demonstrations in Nakuru.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the journalists marched from the County Information Office through the streets of Embu to the County Commissioner’s office, where they submitted petition documents demanding better protection for media personnel.
The petition highlights the increasing cases of police intimidation and violence against reporters covering anti-government demonstrations.
The Wanjeri incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with media organizations and journalists calling for swift action against the responsible officer.
Wanjeri, who is currently recovering at home, was shot despite clearly identifying herself as a journalist.
At the County Commissioner’s office, journalists met the County Commissioner, Jack Obuo, who addressed the crowd.
Obuo acknowledged the concerns raised by the media personnel and assured them of increased security measures to protect journalists.
“We understand the critical role that journalists play in our society. Be assured that your rights, responsibilities, and privileges are protected in Embu County,” he said.
