The Kenya Government through the Public Service Performance and Delivery Management Department has embarked on plans to enhance the country’s labor force through a joint initiative between the National Youth Service (NYS) and Vocational Education and Training Centres (TVET).
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced that the government plans to convert all VTCs to joint centers for NYS and TVET.
The CS spoke to journalists at the governor’s office after an inspection tour of the TVETs and Vocational Training Colleges (VTCs) in Embu County.
He was in the company of TVET Principal Secretary Esther Mworia.
“This initiative is called NYS-TVET Mashinani and will provide upgraded technical skills to students who have completed paramilitary service training in the 22 units countrywide,” said Kuria.
The CS added that students learning at the VTCs will also learn positive values imparted by NYS participants.
He revealed that Embu Vocational Centers will be the first pilot institutions for the initiative.
“When the collaboration comes to fruition, the ministry will expand resources in the 26 piloting centers in Embu County. The government will add more computers to the centers offering NYS-TVET Mashinani programs,” he said.
TVET Secretary Mworia expressed optimism that the joint effort would lead to better resource utilization and contribute to a more stable government.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire pledged full support for the initiative, stating that it aligns with her administration’s goal of providing job opportunities for youths and boosting the local economy.
She emphasized that the initiative will equip young Kenyans with skills needed in the international job market, reducing job scarcity in the country.
