Gor Mahia FC outmaneuvered Murang’a Seals FC in a thrilling 3-1 victory at the SportPesa Arena last Saturday.
The win puts Gor Mahia 9 points clear of second place Police FC with 51 points, with both teams having played 28 games.
Murang’a is now at position 11 with 35 points.
With the stake game beginning at 3 pm, Gor Mahia set the winning pace early with a goal from Austin Odhiambo in the first 20 minutes, followed by Benson Omalla’s impressive header that narrowly missed the bar, sending Gor fans into a frenzy.
Murang’a Seals quickly retaliated, with defender Brian Marvin setting up a goal from John Kiplangat, leveling the score at halftime.
The second half saw Murang’a Seals pushing aggressively for the lead, but Gor Mahia’s defense held strong.
Despite several missed opportunities, Murang’a Seals conceded a penalty, allowing Benson Omalla to score his second goal of the match.
Omalla’s decisive strike secured a 3-1 lead for Gor Mahia, sealing their victory in the derby.
“We dominated 70 percent of the game and we are pleased with the win,” said Gor Mahia’s head coach Jonathan McKinstry.
Murang’a Seals’ head coach, Juma Abdallah, praised his team’s performance despite the loss.
“We trained hard, and my players were hungry for victory,” he said.
Murang’a Seals’ strong showing against the seasoned Gor Mahia team highlights their growing reputation in the football community.
The SportPesa Derby showcased Kenya’s football talent and united fans from diverse backgrounds.
Willis Ojwang, the Communication and Advertising Manager at SportPesa, described the match as “a celebration of football, unity, and sportsmanship,” highlighting the game’s positive impact on the community.
Gormahia is expected to face Shabana FC next weekend.
