Concerning statistics have emerged, revealing a significant prevalence of various eye conditions among the residents of Evurore Ward in Mbeere North sub-county, Embu County.
Embu County Health CEC Jamal Runyenje said the free eye services conducted by the Health Department, assisted by CBM and Fred Hollows Foundation, under the vision impact project in Ndenderu and Kyieniri Sub-locations, revealed the statistics where presbyopia led at 27%.
Presbyopia is the gradual loss of one’s ability to focus on nearby objects.
According to the findings, conjunctivitis and cataract conditions followed at 24 and 6 percent.
“The team screened 3,554 at the household level. 835 (23%) had different eye conditions and were referred to Kogari and Kyieniri dispensaries in the area for treatment. 58% (513) turned up for treatment,” he said.
Runyenje noted that 312 people received free medication.
“Out of the 312 people, 45 received free eyeglasses, and 30 were referred to Ishiara hospital for cataract surgeries,” he said.
Runyenje urged Embu locals to love and protect their eyes, ensuring a healthier future, free from the burden of avoidable vision impairment and blindness.
