When you hear the scratching of music from a distance, it draws you in—pulling you closer with its rhythm, energy, and irresistible charm. For many, it is just sound. But behind one such captivating mix is an extraordinary Kenyan deejay redefining what is possible.
Winfred Wanjiku Muchiri, popularly known as DJ Wiwa, is not just spinning tracks—she is spinning a powerful story of resilience, courage, and triumph over adversity.
Born with cerebral palsy in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, Wiwa grew up navigating life with a condition that affects movement and coordination. Like many persons living with disabilities, she faced physical challenges and societal barriers that often limited opportunities.
“I was born with cerebral palsy, grew up with it, and accepted to live differently abled,” she said.
Yet, what makes her stand out is not just her story—but her skill. Despite having limited use of her arms, DJ Wiwa masterfully controls turntables using her feet, delivering electrifying performances that leave audiences in awe.
Her journey to the decks was not straightforward. After studying at Joytown Primary and Secondary School in Thika and later earning a diploma in Tourism and Business Studies, she struggled to secure employment.
Determined to be independent, she turned to small businesses—selling earrings, body wear, and later venturing into tailoring.
But her turning point came through encouragement from her late mother, Rose Mary Njoki, who urged her to pursue deejaying. Wiwa took the leap and enrolled at Talanta Institute, where she trained professionally for four months.

Since launching her career in 2021, she has steadily built a name for herself, performing at high-profile events both locally and internationally.
Her talent has seen her grace global platforms such as the Baobab Summit in Rwanda and the Beijing+30 Review Consultation in Ethiopia. She is also set to perform at the Zero Conference in Austria next year.
“When I began, it was just for a small circle, but I realized I was inspiring many people,” she said. “Parents would tell me that seeing me gave them hope for their children.”
Beyond entertainment, DJ Wiwa is deeply committed to empowering others. She founded Wiwa Entertainment, a company that offers deejaying and sound services while mentoring aspiring talents—especially persons living with disabilities—free of charge.
She is also working to establish “DJ Wiwa Beauty and Disability,” a platform aimed at mentoring young women with disabilities to pursue their dreams across various careers.

Her advocacy extends to menstrual hygiene and reproductive health rights, championing dignity and inclusion for women and girls with disabilities.
Wiwa continues to give back through performances at empowerment forums such as the Mount Kenya Sunshine Rally, where she offers her services freely.
“Years ago, I was one of the participants. Performing there today inspires young people to believe in a brighter future,” she said.

Her story continues to inspire not only persons living with disabilities but society at large—challenging perceptions and proving that ability is not defined by physical limitations.
Today, DJ Wiwa stands as a symbol of resilience and possibility—showing the world that sometimes, the most powerful stories begin with a simple scratch of music.
