Expectant mothers have been advised to prioritize regular antenatal checkups to prevent birth complications and safeguard maternal and infant health.
Neema Universal Healthcare Hospital administrator and anesthetist Martin Murithi emphasized the importance of early detection and medical intervention, noting that conditions like high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and fetal distress could be managed effectively if identified early.
Speaking during a free maternity training session at the hospital, Murithi revealed that three women had been diagnosed with medical concerns during the camp, underscoring the need for regular screenings.
“We encourage more pregnant women to come for checkups so we can provide the necessary care and ensure safe deliveries,” he said.
The free medical camp offered consultation services, ultrasound screenings, and training on pregnancy danger signs. Attendees also received guidance on proper nutrition, safe exercise, and mental well-being during pregnancy.
Murithi warned against misconceptions and reliance on traditional birth practices without medical supervision, saying such practices often contribute to preventable complications.
The initiative was a relief to many women facing financial challenges in accessing maternal healthcare. Lucy Mwende, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
“Many women struggle to afford clinic visits. This checkup and ultrasound allow me to focus on saving for delivery,” she said.
Ruth Nyawira from Embu town said the consultation helped ease her anxiety about pregnancy, while Felistus Njoki highlighted how the training had reshaped her understanding of maternal health.
Universal Healthcare Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for accessible maternal healthcare to reduce pregnancy-related risks and improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
