The Embu Water and Sanitation Company (Ewasco) has cautioned its customers against a fraudulent SMS message that falsely claims to be from the utility company.
The message, suspected to contain a harmful link, is designed to deceive recipients into sharing sensitive information.
In an official statement, Ewasco disowned the message sent through their SMS platform on Thursday, morning hours.
The company reassured customers that it does not request personal or financial information through SMS.
Arise Media saw the misleading message, which read: “KenyaPost—Your package cannot be delivered due to unpaid customs fees. Please confirm your payment to avoid delays,” followed by a suspicious link.
Ewasco urged its customers not to click on any links or attachments in such messages, warning of potential risks.
“We would like to inform you that a recent message you may have received from KenyaPost is not from our official communication channels. Please disregard the message,” read part of the statement.
The company advised those with concerns or inquiries to contact them directly through their official communication channels.
The warning comes amid rising digital fraud cases in Kenya, with cybercriminals exploiting the trust customers place in reputable service providers.
Ewasco reiterated its commitment to safeguarding customer data and encouraged vigilance against potential scams.
