The acclaimed film “MEDICINE MAN” from Embu County has garnered significant recognition at this year’s African Film Festival (TAFF) in Dallas, Texas-USA, securing nominations in three prestigious categories.
The film, produced by the renowned filmmaker Betty Kathungu has been nominated for Best Cinematography – captivating visuals that showcase beautiful sceneries, Best Actress – Njoki wa Njiru’s powerful performance and Best Indigenous Film – celebrating Kenya’s cultural heritage and traditional Healing.
The ‘MEDICINE MAN’ has captivated audiences with its compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and masterful direction, making it a standout in the competitive festival circuit.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire acknowledged the nominations, emphasizing the film’s impact on the global stage.
“The film showcases our great talents, the beautiful Embu, and celebrates Embu’s Cultural Heritage and traditions,” she said.
The governor encouraged the producer and her team to continue mentoring talent and flying the Embu flag high.
Ms Kathungu expressed her excitement and gratitude for the nominations through her Facebook channel, thanking Governor Mbarire for acknowledging their work.
She also congratulated the team for developing such a great Indigenous Film.
Medicine Man, a vernacular movie shot in Embu County is the 120-minute thriller/drama story of how a lone doctor (Pish Kago) overcomes the odds to redeem the community he loves from the shackles of witchcraft and the enslavement of a warlock’s (Sam Ukavi) power.

The African Film Festival (TAFF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mentorship programs for underserved aspiring filmmakers of African descent; encouraging the art of storytelling; and teaching African culture through motion pictures, arts, and storytelling.
TAFF was created to give Independent Creative an international platform, and an interest in African art and stories; hence, expanding the market and creating networking opportunities for seasoned and aspiring practitioners to commiserate on ideas and forge working relationships.
