The Embu County government is drafting an Energy Regulation Bill to streamline the energy sector by overseeing investors, distribution, and sales within the county.

Speaking during an induction session with key stakeholders, County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Energy Elijah Njeru Mugo stated that the bill will enhance governance through clear policies.

“The county will allocate an additional Sh5 million on top of contributions from development partners to facilitate the bill’s establishment,” Mugo said, adding that the energy plan will be in place within five months.

The county has partnered with Kenya Power and international institutions to deepen sector insights. The bill will regulate fuel stations, solar energy businesses, improved stove entrepreneurs, and gas stations.

Additionally, Mugo revealed plans to cut electricity costs by installing solar panels in markets and public facilities.

Miriam Kamau, a forest officer, welcomed the initiative, citing its role in environmental conservation and the transition to renewable energy.

Samuel Mwangangi from Caritas-Embu, a socio economic arm of the Catholic church emphasized the benefits for rural communities, particularly women, and stressed that the bill would enhance home safety by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Once enacted, the bill is expected to create a structured and sustainable energy framework for Embu County.
