Embu residents have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to locate and present 24-year-old Billy Mwangi, who was allegedly abducted by men suspected to be police officers.
Mwangi was reportedly taken in Shakahola, Manyatta Constituency, in late December 2024, by hooded men in a double-cabin pickup vehicle.
The incident sparked outrage, leading to protests which culminated at the Embu Police Station on Thursday.
Led by Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, the protesters accused police of unconstitutional actions, claiming the abduction was linked to Mwangi sharing an AI-generated image critical of the president.
“This is a violation of freedom of expression,” said Mukunji, demanding accountability and Mwangi’s safe return.
Embu West OCPD Zachariah Omai denied police involvement, assuring residents that investigations into Mwangi’s disappearance are underway. He urged patience as the process continues.
However, residents vowed to intensify protests if Mwangi is not returned alive and unharmed, calling the incident a gross violation of human rights.
