The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Itabua Police Station, in Embu County Mary Syombua Mutunga, was arrested earlier last week by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on allegations of extortion.
Syombua is accused of demanding a bribe of Sh100,000 to facilitate the release of a motor vehicle impounded and detained at the station allegedly without any justifiable reason.
The arrest came after the vehicle’s owners, a man, and his wife, reported the incident to the EACC, alleging that Syombua had threatened to detain them if they continued to demand the release of their car without paying the bribe.
The couple’s call for assistance prompted EACC officers to take action, leading to the arrest of the OCS.
Following her apprehension, she was taken to the EACC Central Regional Office in Nyeri, where she was processed.
The report published on the EACC’s X space on Sunday indicates that Syombua was released on cash bail and is required to report back to the authorities on August 7, 2024, as investigations continue.
