The County of Embu has commissioned the modernized Gituara and Kavutiri coffee factories under Murue Farmers Cooperative Society in Manyatta Constituency to enhance coffee value addition and improve farmers’ earnings.

Speaking during the commissioning, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire said the modernization efforts, including the installation of solar dryers, renovation of parchment drying tables, and upgrading of fermentation tanks and channels, have significantly improved production.

She noted that Gituara Coffee Factory increased production by over 100,000 kilos, rising from 401,000 kilos in 2023/24 to 501,000 kilos in 2024/25, while Kavutiri recorded an increase of over 200,000 kilos within the same period.

“With the newly installed solar dryers, the two factories can now dry coffee in eight days, compared to the traditional 14 days, reducing processing time and enhancing quality,” Mbarire stated.

She reaffirmed the county’s commitment to supporting farmers through subsidized farm inputs and strengthening value chains to maximize their earnings.

Coffee farming remains a key economic pillar for Embu County, significantly contributing to export income and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.
