Tensions reached a boiling point among boda boda operators in Embu town as they called for the dissolution of their leadership, alleging that their leaders denied them their share of funds offered by politicians to thwart Generation-Z demonstrations.
The unrest culminated in the physical assault of their County and Kirimari Ward chairpersons by disgruntled operators on Tuesday.
The BodaBoda Association of Kenya (BAK) Embu chairman Martin Mucira alias Kaa Ngumu and John Kavuri, Kirimari Ward BodaBoda Chairman faced the wrath of the agitated crowd.
The incident occurred at the Embu’s Moi Stadium, where frustrations over the alleged stealing of the funds boiled over.
Operators claim that at least Sh350, 000 had been offered by local politicians led by Governor Cecily Mbarire, intended as an incentive to curb participation in the recent Gen-Z protests.
However, many operators insist they never received their share. “Our leaders have failed us, and we demand that they step down immediately,” said Coronel Muchoki, a rider.
Muchoki alleged that the money might have been offered to disturb the peace, as it was allegedly subdivided among a few members.
“How the funds were distributed raises many questions. If there were no ill intentions, the money would have been given through the picking bay chairpersons, not behind closed doors to a select few,” he said.
Moses Kambembe, another rider, revealed that the community had learned their topmost leaders had attended at least five meetings convened by politicians since the Gen-Z launched countrywide demonstrations.
“Our leaders have been attending secret meetings with politicians and pocketing money meant for all of us. This betrayal has to end, and we demand accountability,” said Kambembe.
The chairpersons were rescued by local authorities.
This comes amid reports from local leaders alleging that goons were hired to thwart and destroy buildings during the Gen-Z demonstrations.
Former senator Lenny Kivuti suggested that the destruction, which occurred in a suspected arson incident, might have been orchestrated by cunning politicians aiming to conceal their incompetence and evade future scrutiny.
