The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Embu Executive Secretary, Josphat Kariuki Kathumi, has warned politicians—especially Members of Parliament—against politicizing the education sector, saying such interference risks undermining schools and confusing stakeholders.

Speaking in Embu, Kathumi cautioned lawmakers against making public statements on school funding without factual backing, noting that misleading claims can misinform parents, teachers, and the public.

He emphasized that headteachers are best placed to understand schools’ financial realities, urging policymakers to rely on their input when discussing education funding and policy reforms.

Kathumi observed that students’ capitation has not been reviewed since 2002, despite a sharp rise in the cost of living, leaving schools severely underfunded and forcing parents to shoulder additional expenses.

To ease the burden on families, he called on the government to reduce taxes and tame the high cost of living, saying this would help parents meet basic school requirements such as uniforms.

He also urged parents to ensure that all learners transitioning to Grade 10 report back to school, citing presidential directives aimed at achieving universal access to education.

Meanwhile, during the KNUT Embu branch elections, Kathumi was re-elected Secretary General, while Erastus Muthenya retained his seat as Chairman and John Kabuthia continued as Treasurer.
