The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched investigations into an alleged KSh 95 million tender irregularities scandal involving three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Embu County.
Detectives from the commission have pitched camp at the county government headquarters, where they are scrutinizing procurement processes and financial records linked to the suspected deals.
The probe targets the three MCAs alongside several county officials accused of irregularly awarding tenders to companies allegedly linked to them. Investigators believe the firms may have been used as fronts to siphon public funds through a well-coordinated scheme.
Preliminary findings indicate that the MCAs have beneficial interests in at least eleven companies that secured contracts from the county government, raising concerns over conflict of interest, abuse of office, and violations of procurement laws.
According to EACC Central Regional Manager Japheth Baithalu, the suspects may have received up to KSh 95 million from the questioned contracts.
On Tuesday, EACC officers spent hours collecting key documents, including procurement records, payment details, and contract files tied to the firms under investigation. The documents are expected to be crucial in determining whether due process was followed.
Baithalu said investigators are focusing on whether the MCAs influenced the tendering process and failed to declare their interests as required by law.
Although the county government has cooperated with the probe, the operation created tension within offices as detectives moved to secure critical evidence.
The commission has reaffirmed that investigations are ongoing and warned that those found culpable will face legal action.
